On July 7, 2009, Alfa Romeo II beat the Morning Glory record for best day's run set in the 2005 race, by sailing 399 nautical miles (459mi; 739km) in 24 hours. Finishing in a squall that night was the smallest boat in the fleet, Falk Meissners Olson 25 Shark on Bluegrass. The incredible singlehanded sailors! After two years of preparation, I thought I knew how challenging this race would be, but I underestimated how mentally difficult it would be to complete the passage in solitude and to cross an imaginary finish line at the Hanalei Bay anchorage.
